Stand Alone Governors are built with much greater attention to performance than Governors that spend most of their lives connected to a large grid.  Stand Alone Governors must respond quickly and accurately to load changes, keeping the speed of the plant and the frequency of the power to very exacting standards.

Depending on the size of the plant and other considerations, Thomson Turbine Governors have many Stand Alone products that can handle unit sizes from 10 kW to 50 Mw.  We consider ourselves experts at providing flexible high performance and inexpensive solutions to these applications.

TTG600 governing breaks into two distinct sections, simple stand-alone plants for residencies or single loads, and more complex stand alone governing that may be able to connect to a utility grid also (convertible operation) or operate a community size installation as a prime source of power.

TTG-600: Load Control Governors and Unit Controllers

Load control Governors and Unit ControllersTTG-600 Controllers provide high performance governing by maintaining full load on the Hydro Generator at all times.  Any Power not utilized by user loads is automatically diverted into a “load dump” which can be either a water cooled heater in the power plant or air heaters installed around the outside of the power plant building.  Because the load is always constant on the turbine, water hammer concerns and complex hydraulic governing calculations are not necessary.  Highly accurate governing that easily obtains utility quality of power standards is possible.

Pure load control governing is usually limited to plants smaller than 60 kW in output.  Above this limit, TTG-600 controllers can still be used by allowing the controller to roughly adjust the output of the turbine by using simple hydraulics.  These methods allow the TTG-600 series to control plants of output of up to about 300 kW in size.  If the stand alone plant is bigger than 300 kW, then also consider using the TTG-660 and TTG-601 matched pair.

Wasted energy can be minimized by purchasing TTG-50 load management units.  These controls will continually try to turn on additional interruptible loads until there is insufficient wasted energy to turn anything else on.

Off-the-shelf components are used throughout. A keypad and alphanumeric display on the controller panel is used for testing, set-up, and local control of the turbine. No additional equipment or software is required. A PLC platform is utilized for the required logic, allowing flexibility to adapt to future needs.  Various turbine types can be accomodated.  Various options for Turbine Inlet Valve control, Head Level Control and Communications are avaialble.

Features:

  • Sequenced Startup upon a start request
  • Sequenced Shut-down upon a stop request
  • Highly accurate governing without water hammer.
  • Head Level Option available.
  • Logic can control up to 250 kW if the necessary power circuits are designed in.
  • Communications Options including Internet connectivity is available.

TTG-650: Hydraulic Speed Governors and Unit Controllers

This product is designed to provide electrohydraulic turbine control to sites that do not need full speed governing. This allows the product to be designed for very simple HPU and turbine control systems. The package is normally designed to be physically integrated into the hydraulic power unit (HPU) used for control of hydraulic turbines. The controller will be customized for each type of hydraulic arrangement. This is done by Thomson Turbines and the HPU supplier if the HPU is supplied separately. Off-the-shelf components are used throughout. A keypad and alphanumeric display on the controller panel is used for testing, set-up, and local control of the turbine. No additional equipment or software is required. A PLC platform is utilized for the required logic, allowing flexibility to adapt to different HPU designs. A standardized interface is presented to the rest of the control system and switchgear, requiring relatively simple signals from the plant control system. The standardized interface can be utilized partially for simple plant operating, or more fully as required. Designed for grid operation, without stand-alone. The Standard Controller can interface with up to three turbine control elements (i.e. a twin nozzle Pelton or Turgo machine), plus a turbine inlet valve. This means that Frances and Kaplan machines can also be accommodated.

Functions:

  • Sequenced Startup upon a run input
  • Sequenced Shut-down upon removing the run signal
  • Upon command will Auto-synchronize turbine speed to the bus and provide a close to line contact
  • Power control when grid connected
  • Optionally provides Hydraulic Pump Control and pressure regulation
  • Provides inputs for alarming and tripping due to abnormal HPU conditions
